An Alternative Method to Analyze Waveforms from Bender Element Tests in Soft Clays

Abstract Bender element (BE) testing has become a widely used technique to evaluate S-wave velocities and derive shear moduli from them in laboratory tests. Results of BE tests depend heavily on the proper identification travel time waveforms often affected detrimentally by factors such as near-field effect, crosstalk, noise, or drift. The authors have performed soil specimens Texcoco Clay over last few years triaxial cells oedometers sometimes dealt with influenced those undesirable thus, it was observed that using different available techniques are prone errors. This paper shows can be assessed unambiguously distance between inflection points present both source received signals when generated input frequencies superimposed, even approach, named here Wave Inflection Method (WI method), yields good results, at least applied data obtained soft Clays. method validated applying synthetic experimental oedometer equipped BE. When previously published wide range types, our results suggest WI significantly reduces subjectivity produces improved reliability evaluating time.
